Welcome to the OUTLOOK Library

All issues of OUTLOOK (with the exceptions of issues 16 and 27) can be accessed through the links below.  All articles published in OUTLOOK that are not currently under copyright are available.

Additionally, we are selecting articles for our "Editor's Choice" series.  These we have chosen for their heightened relevance for today's Educator.  Mary Lynch is our primary Editor for this important feature.

Please take a moment to read this notice concerning the FEATURES, FUTURE (and CAVEATS) of the OUTLOOK library.

FEATURES
All files are in searchable PDF format.  When opened in most PDF readers, you may search the file for specific words or phrases.*

FUTURE
Soon both the OUTLOOKS and the Editor's Choice articles will be searchable from within a search-box directly on this page.  A search, either by keyword, or by word or phrase within the article, will retreive only those files matching your criteria.

CAVEATS
*Some words and phrases will not be found in a Keyword or Phrase search in your PDF reader.  Due to the ideosynchratic positioning of some text, often in juxtaposition with images, certain text had to be processed as an image.  This text is not found in a search but reads normally on the page.  The full Index, accessed separately through the link below, is fully searchable, yet some of the indexes in the OUTLOOKS themselves are not.

You can help by alerting us to any garbled text, missing photos, or other abnormalities.  These files were produced by a multi-stage process including hand-formatting for machine readability and translation.  Errors are likely from both man and machine!  Please let us know here.

ENJOY!

Editor's Choice

The 'After School' School at San Cipriano

Education Through the Environment
by Ronald W. Colton

OUTLOOK #37, Autumn 1980

The Visual Language of Children: Expression in Pictures and Models:
By Mary Eisenberg, published in

A Pentagon Paper:
By Barry Kluger-Bell and Jane Richtmeyer
The humble pentagon acquires worlds of meaning when it teams-up with others like it, and with other shapes.  The photos alone are worth the price of admission.
OUTLOOK # 14, Winter 1974

Daryl: Becomng Part of a Group
By Kathe Jervis
Kathe Jervis illustrates her experience as an observer in an urban 2nd and 3rd grade classroom. Kathe focuses her observations on the teacher’s emphasis on relationships in the classroom. She looks at the classroom relationships through the lens of a child named Daryl, who, at the beginning of the school year, has difficulty entering into relationships with others, but with the support of his teacher begins to become part of the classroom community.
OUTLOK #49, Autumn 1983

Education and the Quality of Experience
By Lilian Katz
Lilian Katz expresses her opinion on the problems that are caused by applying manufacturing concepts to education. She points out the negative aspects of creating larger class sizes in order to save money, and she argues that the problems that arise from creating larger classes actually cost schools more in the long run than they save. Although Katz wrote the article in the early 1970's, this debate continues in many school districts throughout the country to this day.
