HISTORICAL PUBLICATIONS:

Exploring, Sensibility and Wonder: Science  With Young Children And Using The Senses
by Kees Both
Both’s insightful article looks back to the work of Hawkins and others in the 1970′s, and integrates those lessons of the past with pedagogy of 1997, its year of publication.  He saw that “revolutions” in early childhood education were unnecessary, and states the case for an integration of perspectives, rather than an abandonment of earlier ideas.  Both describes his Hawkins-influenced work in the Netherlands, and argues passionately for the centrality of science inquiry in early childhood education.  Both’s article is timeless.  Today’s teachers can draw much from its descriptions of theory and practice.      Härnqvist, K/ A. Burgen (eds.)(1997), Growing up with Science. Developing  Early Understanding of Science. London: Jessica Kingsley/ Academia Europaea.
